Today I interview Sue Thistle, author of the Amazon New Release Chem-Free Sobriety. This book provides an inside look at 101 recovery trailblazers with 1-49 years of sobriety. Each story answers the following questions: When did you start drinking or using drugs, and how did it progress? Looking back, when do you think it was mostly out of control? How are you able to not drink or use daily? What is your thought about medication-assisted treatment? Is there anything you want those struggling with addiction to know? What do you want lawmakers to know?
In Sue's words:
I am a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, of 15 years, and worked in prevention prior. I am also a person in long-term recovery, 33 years. My road to recovery was not an easy one, laced with a traumatic childhood and emotional pain. However, after spending my entire recovery path reading and studying addiction, attending therapy, and getting a Masters in Counseling Psychology with a substance abuse concentration, I have learned to live life on life’s terms. I thank God every day for a life second to none. My dreams are coming true and I am able to help others through the work I do and my professional and personal experience.
Sue's 3 top recommendations:
1. You do not need medication to recover from a substance use disorder.
2. If you connect with a higher power for help, opportunities to stay away from drugs increases.
3. There are millions of people who get and stay sober without medication and want to support people who would like to do the same.
