151 Janet Gourand: Tribe Sober - Inspiring a life without alcohol
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
Saturday Jun 12, 2021
I have the pleasure of talking to Janet Gourand, the founder of Tribe Sober. In Janet's words:
Tribe Sober’s mission is to inspire an alcohol-free life.
Over the last 5 years, we have built a community of people who are changing their relationship
with alcohol. We have sober people, people who are struggling, people who are well on their way and
of course newbies. The beautiful thing is we are all helping each other to get (or stay) on track.
We provide workshops, coaching and challenges – but most of all we offer community.
Connection is the opposite of addiction and that’s why having a tribe works so well.
Our community is based on a membership program that offers a Chatroom, a Zoom Cafe, Sober Buddies, a Library, a Yoga Studio, Nutritional and Medical advice – and much more...

The Addicted Child is a parent’s guide to adolescent substance abuse. It guides parents through the maze of teen addiction and gives them a roadmap to help their child through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery process.
In Rick's words:
I have worked with adults and adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. I recently retired from Menninger Clinic in Houston Texas which is one of the nation’s top ten psychiatric hospitals. While at Menninger I worked with adults and adolescents diagnosed with psychiatric and substance use disorders.
Rick's 3 top tips
1. Mental health issues and substance abuse often accompany each other. It is important that both be treated. A treatment plan that addresses only the substance abuse but ignores the mental health issues is a treatment plan that is likely to fail
2. When a child is abusing alcohol or drugs it's important that parents obtain a comprehensive assessment that focuses not just on the substance use but also any accompanying mental health issues. The assessment must be comprehensive and address medical, psychological and addictions issues
3. Parents should carefully monitor their child and be aware of any changes they see. It’s important that parents stay tuned to changes in their child’s behaviours, attitudes, school performance and peers. Changes in these can sometimes signal a child who may be using substances.

147 Dawn Dines - Survival Tuesday - Drink Spiking
Tuesday May 25, 2021
Tuesday May 25, 2021
Spiking is a hugely under-reported problem that affects people the world over. Whether done by a friend as a ‘prank’, or with the intention of committing a far more serious offence, it’s wrong: we all have a right to know exactly what we’re putting into our bodies.
That’s why Dawn established StopTopps, a UK-based nonprofit on a mission to stamp out drink spiking. She’s passionate about keeping vulnerable drinkers safe from opportunists and wants everyone to understand the dangers of drink spiking.
Dawn Dines is the founder of Safe Original Style UK (SOS UK), the non-profit community interest company behind StopTopps.
Dawn is passionate about empowering young people to keep themselves safe, by running educational workshops on alcohol & drug awareness, knife crime & anti-social behaviour cyberbullying and internet safety.
She has also worked with local authorities, supporting children in care and in secure units.
Dawn first pitched the idea of anti-drink-spiking lids on the BBC series Dragon’s Den and took the advice of Peter Jones that it would be more effective as a social enterprise, hence the creation of SOS UK..

Sunday May 16, 2021
Quite frankly, Angela is no one important. If you were to ask what she does or how she identifies, she would most likely say mom. In the last few years, she has noticed divisiveness amongst groups and wants to show the world how similar we all are in our suffering and our joy. She does that with her podcast Relatively Damaged. In addition to the podcast she hopes to effect real policy changes for those who are disabled in the United States where, when one becomes so disabled they need in-home-care, they become a hostage to their home.
Angela Talent is the mother of two. At the age of 35 she was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) which would rob her of the use of her hands and limit her ability to walk. At the beginning of 2021 she realized she could use her ability to listen and have meaningful conversations to show the world how uniquely beautiful the human experience is.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. Notice the beauty around you
2. Remember to breathe
3. Find time to laugh

Sunday May 16, 2021
Sunday May 16, 2021
In 2014, Maureen realized that her beautiful, talented, brilliant daughter, Katie, was addicted to heroin. Despite the fact that she was an educator and had experienced addiction in her own family growing up, she didn’t recognize the signs and as Katie spiralled deeper into the dark world of substance use disorder Maureen could find no help for herself. She decided she would become the person she needed most and now provides and advocates for family support and education.
Maureen Cavanagh is the President of Magnolia New Beginnings, a national nonprofit and peers support group with over 25,000 members, and Magnolia Recovery and Consulting Services, both founded in 2012. She holds a Master’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
Maureen is a national public speaker on the parent perspective of addiction and the author of “If You Love Me: A Mother’s Journey Through Her Daughter’s Addiction and Recovery” published by Henry Holt/Macmillan in 2018. Maureen is the creator of the NAADAC approved Family-Focused Addiction Support Training (FAST) Program and consults on the creation and improvement of family wellness programs for those supporting a person with a substance use disorder.
Maureen's 3 top tips:
1. Families can recover along with their loved ones
2. Communities can educate families which will have a positive impact on substance use disorder fatalities and recurrence of symptoms in their community.
3. There are resources for families and they do not need to do this alone.
