99 Yishan Xu - Why a sleep psychologist can literally save your life
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
Tuesday Nov 24, 2020
Hello, I am Dr. Xu, a licensed clinical psychologist, the founder and director of our clinic: Mind & Body Garden Psychology. Thank you very much for visiting the website of our clinic, and hopefully you find some contents here useful for you.
I am a sleep specialist trained in Stanford Sleep Medicine Department, gained the Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (DBSM) certified by The Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. I am serving as a committee member in Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.
I always see the role of a psychologist as a gardener. When people come to us seeking support, they may have too many branches of mental blocks and bushes of stress in their lives. What we can do is to help people be more aware of the branches and bushes that impact their quality of life, and then assist them to trim these parts, cope with stress, and live a healthier and happier life.
I grew up in China and speak both Mandarin and English. I strongly advocate evidence-based treatment to develop a more positive attitude, and to build a life that is happier, more balanced, and more meaningful. Many of my clients have a hard time dealing with stress or transitions in life. Others may use some help with improving communication and relationship. They all have a common desire to take active steps to make meaningful and lasting changes.
MY APPROACHES TO THERAPY
I have been trained in various evidence-based therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness Compassionate Approaches. I believe that therapy requires a teamwork and I love to work with my clients collaboratively and tailor treatment to meet their needs. I always try my best to provide a warm and safe environment for my clients so they have a private space to share their thoughts and feelings freely. I often invite my clients to explore their own strength with me together and practice effective coping skills. The most important aspects of my approach is: It works! I think that is the beauty of applying evidence-based therapy into practice.
MY APPROACHES TO PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING
I believe that everyone is unique, and we all have our own potentials and needs. I want to use psychological testing such as neuropsychological testing as a tool, to help us understand ourselves better, explore our potentials, and seek appropriate help as needed.

In McCall's words:
My name is McCall - I was 8 years old when I walked into my first AlAteen meeting in Oct. 1981, Cleveland, Ohio... when my mom went thru detox and into rehab the first time. She was a single mom and I, an only child. Since then there have been as many crises as one would expect from a progressive illness like this family disease. She finished her 90-something-th detox recently and I have found that sharing my story is helping me find gratitude for her (and my own) disease.

In Shakoya's words
Although, being detained from my parents and going into the foster care system was traumatizing, DCFS and my social workers played a pivotal role in my life from the age of 7 – 21 which I attribute to the tremendous support that was provided to me. While I was eager to no longer be involved in the process (DCFS), I learned to be open and have patience. This experience taught me to trust the process… abandonment, attachment issues, codependency, coping, healing and now I am a Social Worker … GROWTH is a JOURNEY.
Shakoya Green, M.A, M.S.W, is an established professional Social Worker in the behavioral health and social services field. A native of Compton, California, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Family Development from San Diego State University and a Master of Human Behavior from National University. She obtained a second Master’s Degree in Social Work from California State University Dominguez Hills.
Ms. Green’s acquaintance with social services and the impact it has on individuals is relatively due to her own lived experiences. Ms. Green was born into a home with drug addicted parents and as a result was raised by her maternal grandmother in the foster care system. As an experienced Social Worker she has combined her traumatic lived experiences with her expertise in management acuity to facilitate awareness of program goals, objectives, and desired outcomes for her staff. Her fervor for human development and community awareness have sustained her professional proficiency and ensured longevity and success within her line of work.
Shakoya's 3 top tips
1. Learn from your Trauma - take time to heal
2. Have high self esteem, high self confidence and know that your past does not dictate your present or future
3. Always be intentional

94 Nathanie Etinoffe - What I learned from attending AA that warrants your attention
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Nathanie Etinoffe is a Performing Artist, award winning poet and a student of entrepreneurship. Shortly before graduating high school, her dream to become a concert soloist was shattered, when ordered to choose something else. Consequently, Nathanie trained and worked in various capacities. Nathanie is passionate about volunteerism. Unable to build her career as a concert soloist, Nathanie did vocal renditions for church functions, and toured as supporting artist in Dominica with visiting gospel music bands. Nathanie has also volunteered for fund raisers for the homeless, and women enslaved in human trafficking. Nathanie enjoys learning Internet Marketing and performing poetry.
Nathanie tells us how a non addict was positively impacted by Alcoholics Anonymous and dispels erroneous ideas about AA. Her message is clear: leaders are born in AA. Be empowered to develop determination to stay the course for yourself and be constructive when support systems aren't available.
Nathanie's 3 top tips:
1. Find tools from meetings that I used while away. Eg The prayer Lord grant me the power to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Listening to the stories shared made the people who were sharing them caused me to identified with them. It also brought me clarity. I was thinking how comes we’ve never met before but our experiences are similar
2. It’s community
3. It has a spiritual element to it. I experienced forgiveness, I found hope, not everyone in AA are addicts.
Nathanie's offer:
Enjoy 40% savings in ten days of joining on beauty products, pets products, and much more. Products help with: losing weight, enjoying restful night sleep, aids with mental acuity, helps reduce stress, reverse pain and inflammation. Add an extra 5% savings on auto-ship. In Esther's words: There’s a lot more to Yoga than you might think. Far more than the exercise class it is often perceived to be, Yoga is a system for the sort of growth and healing required for recovery from addiction. Offering tools to promote self reflection, self compassion, emotional regulation, physical and mental healing and much more, Yoga offers everything needed to heal from the wounds that cause addiction, and develop healthy coping strategies for life, so that numbing is no longer required.Esther has 6 years of sobriety all thanks to Yoga. And she will tell us how.Esther Nagle is a sober, tattooed, single mother, rock chick Yoga teacher with ADHD. Sober for 6 years, and diagnosed with ADHD just last year at 46, Esther has had a ‘colourful’ life, spontaneous and adventurous even in sobriety.Esther has written a book about her recovery and the Yoga that guided her there, and now focuses her teaching and writing on helping women with ADHD calm the emotional storms and find inner peace. Using, you’ve guessed it, the same tools that helped her to achieve sobriety! Esther loves sobriety, and is so grateful she found her path there.Esther's top 3 tips1. Three Rules of Yoga - Don’t Judge, Don’t Compare, Don’t Beat yourself up2. Learn to breathe!3. Forgiveness is for you, not them. Forgive them, and forgive yourself. Shame cannot live alongside forgiveness.
Esther is running an online retreat for women with ADHD on November 1 2020. Check it out! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1D68Ioo6BBJlN1E3zNRMnxKcWHZdfycb5MpnlKueEedU/edit?usp=sharing
