Whitney's story
I went on a downward spiral in late middle school. I went to extreme measures to gain attention and popularity. I got pregnant at 20, I was freshmen in college, I married my child’s father. After 3 years of physical and emotional abuse (and his cheating), I left that marriage. I then went on a string of toxic and abusive relationships. Throw in another pregnancy (of which I didnt know who the father was) and an abortion. A few years after that I married an alcoholic soldier in the US Army. That was a brief marriage of emotional abuse, toxic drinking (my ex husand) and even illegitimate children by my husband and another woman. One night I had hit my breaking point, and I remember crying on my bathroom floor and God asking me “Are you done? Are you done doing things on your own?”
The next morning I packed up my things, rented a u-haul and moved back home. I began to pick up the pieces of my life. I did some inner work and healed the wounds that were causing me to repeat toxic cycles in my life. I had to take ownership of the situations I was creating for myself over and over again. I rediscovered God and went on a journey of healing. I eventually found my passion for coaching women to show them how to break up with shame around their past and unlock their own authentic self.
3 top tips
1. Take ownership to become powerful.
2. Break out of a victim mindset.
3. Show up as your authentic self, even when others don’t like it.

Episode 41 - CJ Grace - Thriving after infidelity, cancer and marital breakdown
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
Tuesday Aug 04, 2020
CJ Grace had lived a charmed life. A dream job as BBC journalist and then working for China Radio International in Beijing, falling in love with an American she met there. Her 25th wedding anniversary was the best one ever, spent in Hawaii, where they had a second home. Just 2 years later, her life was in tatters. Her husband had a mistress half his age, and CJ got breast cancer. Refusing to be a victim and hanging on to her sense of humor, CJ developed a 6-part program to use adversity as a catalyst to reinvent her midlife.
C. J. Grace is the author of Adulterer’s Wife: How to Thrive Whether You Stay or Not and currently completing Hotel Chemo: My Wild Ride through Breast Cancer and Infidelity. She dealt with the double whammy of discovering her husband’s infidelity and shortly after being diagnosed with breast cancer by refusing to be a victim and keeping her wicked sense of humor. C. J. was a BBC journalist and voiceover artist in the UK and later worked for China Radio International in Beijing. She insists that the obstacles she’s faced have enabled her to make midlife better than her younger days.
3 top tips from CJ:
1. After infidelity, the best revenge is to get past the need for it.
2. Going through cancer reminds you that life is short, so go for what you want now.
3. Happiness is seeing the humor in life’s absurdities. If you don’t laugh, you’ll cry.

Today I interview my fellow author Tiff Johnson. Her story is mind-blowing and her book is a fantastic read. Here is my review on Amazon:
"Sometimes a book just grabs you without you knowing why this really happens. This was the case for me. Tiffany's journey from the Australian farm into the beautiful wide world is a coming-of-age story, but not dreamed up in Hollywood by script-writers. Instead, Tiffany tells it in the humble way as she experienced this journey. And she doesn't mince words. For many years I had a recurring nightmare that included missing buses and trains. Reading Tiffany's story I now know that I am not alone with this regard. She has been a former master in doing so. And it is her lack of hesitation to share her embarrassments, shame and guilt which makes this book so compelling. Tiffany shares her life, warts and all. And this is entirely refreshing at a time when people add layers of masks to do anything but show their real self. But I guess facing a major disaster in which 21 other young people would perish changes the way you look at the world. Tiffany decided to share her experiences so that others can learn. And I for one feel humbled that I have learned from her by reading this book."
Tiffany is the author of the best selling memoir Brave Enough Now, Keynote Inspirational Speaker and Podcast Host of the podcast When we are BRAVE, a podcast sharing conversations nad inspirational stories plus tips and tricks on living your best and breakfast life. Tiffany shares her story of survival from the 1999 Swiss Canyoning Disaster, where 21 young people died. Tiffany miraculously survived. She now lives her life to help empower people to listen to their institution, be brilliantly brave and live their best and bravest life.

I have got the pleasure of talking to burnout coach Cait Donovan. Our interview is a match-made-in-heaven (or really hell?). After all, I have been the biggest culprit as far as burnout is concerned - I can burn the candle on both ends and at a few places in the middle!
Burnout is rampant worldwide and since COVID-19 hit, more and more people have become aware of how chronic stress is wearing on their bodies and minds. Western culture has created a system that drives us to burnout by teaching us to crave the next goal, the next achievement, the next level of pay - all while ignoring our true internal needs and desires. Being addicted to overworking holds the same mechanisms of being addicted to any substance and recovery requires a lot of the same steps.
Caitlin Donovan is one of New York City’s leading burnout experts and acupuncturists, host of “Fried – The Burnout Podcast,” and author of the book "The Bouncebackability Factor: End Burnout, Gain Resilience, and Change the World". Her master’s degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine enables Caitlin to combine Eastern wisdom with her natural practicality. After performing more than 25,000 acupuncture treatments, Caitlin added 1:1 coaching, corporate workshops, and keynotes for companies such as PTC and Lululemon – all with a focus on burnout. She has been featured on podcasts and online magazines such as “Forbes”, “Elephant Journal,” “Thrive Global,” “Addicted 2 Success”, as well as quoted in Oprah Magazine.
Cait's top 3 tips:
1. Leaning into ‘negative’ emotions can save you (esp resentment)
2. Brain changes are consistent with trauma, chronic stress, and addiction
3. There is a distinct difference between burnout prevention and burnout recovery

Because of constant, intense sensory input, it’s easy for people who are highly sensitive to become over-stimulated. They often turn to alcohol or drugs to manage the sensory overload and emotional overwhelm. Although it’s tempting for those with the trait of high sensitivity to try to ignore it or silence it (such as with drugs or alcohol), it’s more effective to learn how to embrace the trait and turn it into an advantage. Although being highly sensitive can be perceived as a weakness, you can learn how to embrace it as a true strength.
Linda Binns is an accomplished energy coach, speaker and author of several books on energy.
As a sensitive, introverted and highly empathic person, who was not expected to succeed, she has surpassed everyone’s expectations (including her own). Her mission is to help her clients discover essential techniques for freeing their energy, clarifying focus, and incorporating inner awareness, acceptance, and peace, so that they can claim the success and fulfillment they deserve. She specializes in working with Highly Sensitive Professionals.

Episode 34 - Michael Carrasquillo (CQ) - Say yes to as many experiences as you can
Thursday Jul 23, 2020
Thursday Jul 23, 2020
Today I speak with CQ - Disabled Veteran turned Comedian turned Pop Culture Radio Show Host.
CQ and I discuss the many faces of PTSD. As part of the tip of the spear, CQ was serving 2 combat tours before being wounded in Afghanistan in 2005. When the metal met the meat (shot 5 times) CQ's life changed forever. He struggled for years with PTSD before starting to work with non-profit organizations and charities. In 2016 CQ stumbled into a comedy course as part of the Army's rehabilitation efforts, and the rest is history. CQ has performed in legendary places like DC Improv and Gotham NYC and earlier this year started “Pop Culture Warrior” on the WTF Nation Radio station.
CQ's 3 key suggestions:
1. Tragic things happen in our lives but they don’t have to define who you are
2. Bring some positivity into the world
3. Say yes to as many experiences as you can. You never know what you’ll fall in love with!

Today I interview Sue Thistle, author of the Amazon New Release Chem-Free Sobriety. This book provides an inside look at 101 recovery trailblazers with 1-49 years of sobriety. Each story answers the following questions: When did you start drinking or using drugs, and how did it progress? Looking back, when do you think it was mostly out of control? How are you able to not drink or use daily? What is your thought about medication-assisted treatment? Is there anything you want those struggling with addiction to know? What do you want lawmakers to know?
In Sue's words:
I am a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, of 15 years, and worked in prevention prior. I am also a person in long-term recovery, 33 years. My road to recovery was not an easy one, laced with a traumatic childhood and emotional pain. However, after spending my entire recovery path reading and studying addiction, attending therapy, and getting a Masters in Counseling Psychology with a substance abuse concentration, I have learned to live life on life’s terms. I thank God every day for a life second to none. My dreams are coming true and I am able to help others through the work I do and my professional and personal experience.
Sue's 3 top recommendations:
1. You do not need medication to recover from a substance use disorder.
2. If you connect with a higher power for help, opportunities to stay away from drugs increases.
3. There are millions of people who get and stay sober without medication and want to support people who would like to do the same.
