315 Kattie Lail: Overcoming Meth Addiction and helping others to do the same
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
Kattie was exposed to meth at a very young age. Both her parents struggled with meth addiction, which resulted in a very dysfunctional home. When she was arrested at 19, Kattie realized she didn’t want to continue going down the same path. She went on to be a counselor of high-risk populations and remained sober for a number of years. After a relapse she was arrested on federal charges and spent three years in prison. That’s when Kattie finally started to accept help from the people around her. She found a loving, supportive community to help her maintain wellness.
She has a passion for criminal justice reform and wants to serve as a voice for those who are voiceless. She now serves as Addiction Wellness Coach Supervisor at Face It TOGETHER, a nonprofit dedicated to helping those impacted by addiction, including loved ones, get well. She’s a wealth of knowledge and empathy and uses her painful past experiences to help others.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. Ask for help. It took me so long to accept help from people in my life. Once I did, it made all the difference.
2. Let go of your anger. I spent many years angry, especially at my Mom. As I’ve grown older, I’ve found much more compassion for her.
3. Incorporate mindfulness into your wellness whenever you can. I’m a big believer in the power of being present with your thoughts, feelings and actions.

313 John Davis: Combating Veteran Suicide - Your new Mission after the Military
Tuesday Nov 22, 2022
Tuesday Nov 22, 2022
John is the most tattooed person with a Harvard degree and has taught everything from incarcerated teenagers in New York to English in Asia to American Youth Ninja Warrior. He’s spoken to congress regarding veteran issues and is the author of Combat To College. John enjoys traveling, nature, and volunteer work. John currently resides in the Dominican Republic and works as an ambassador for the Foundation for a healthier Senegal.
In John's words:
My journey of self-discovery after the military was a roller coaster. There were meltdowns battling PTSD, I got married and divorced, saw the bottom of a lot of Jack Daniels bottles, visited brothels in Bangkok, spent a night or two in jail, married and divorced again (facepalm), joined a motorcycle club, got addicted to pills, and spent hundreds of hours in tattoo parlors.
After being consumed by my military identity for so long, I didn’t know who I was without it.
It was a journey to get back to myself and I found myself through helping others.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. Traditional therapy isn’t as helpful as we want it to be
2. Veterans should focus on our strengths instead of our weaknesses
3. You need a mentor, and you also need to be a mentor

311 Erik DaRosa: The Importance of Meeting Yourself Where You Are At
Tuesday Nov 15, 2022
Tuesday Nov 15, 2022
Erik DaRosa, known by friends and clients as “Yoda,” is an inspirational speaker and both the Founder and Co-host of the From Survivor to Thriver podcast. Erik is upending the front end of mental health conversations with his Co-host Marc Fernandes. Each week, he tackles different mental health topics through honest and relatable "kitchen table" conversations with real people helping to shatter mental health stigmas and find their voices. He aims to normalize discussions around mental health topics and remind his audience they are not alone, there is strength in community and "it's perfectly ok to not always be ok."
In Erik's words:
For as long as I can remember, I did everything to hide my "not okay-ness" from the world. After years of therapy and a highly effective regime of medications, there were still times that I chose the path of least resistance, the same path that far too many people choose: to suffer in silence. For decades I outwardly displayed a facade, that of a usually smiling, highly functioning, type-A successful overachiever. I had, subconsciously or not, chosen to accept society's stigma rather than embrace my vulnerability.
Stigma says we shouldn't talk openly about these things. I say we should! Stigma also says we shouldn't stand high upon the mountaintop, vulnerable and transparent, for the entire world to see. I say we must!
Together, let's work to break the stigma of mental illness and remind one another that it's perfectly okay to not always be okay. Collectively and with a bit of patience, we'll get through this, I promise.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. There is help
2. There is hope
3. There is a way through

Alexandria DeVito is the founder of Poplin, a pre-pregnancy wellness company for couples. Poplin helps couples *get ready* to get pregnant, starting with the most comprehensive pre-pregnancy wellness assessment out there. Alexandria has two Master’s degrees - one in business from Harvard Business School and one in nutrition. She developed Poplin after working with hundreds of couples trying to conceive, running tons of lab tests to discern what was going on and realizing that they had preventable health problems often undiagnosed by their doctors (including well into multiple rounds of fertility treatments). She knew there had to be a better way and built it from the ground up.
In Alexandria's words:
Most of the time, when we talk about fertility, it’s in the context of infertility - and that’s way too late. As a type A planner, I realized there is guidance, tools and support for every other major milestone in life - weddings, home purchases, careers. It’s much more clinically effective - and it’s a better user experience overall - if we approach pregnancy like we approach these other major milestones. That's when I decided to take my diagnostic approach and protocols beyond the clinic and to serve couples across the country through Poplin. We help healthier parents conceive and give birth to healthier babies.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. Know what you’re working with. Test, don’t guess.
2. Pre-pregnancy planning involves both partners/donors. It’s a 50/50 biological equation.
3. Hormones are only 30% of the equation regarding fertility. Your whole health matters too.

Tuesday Nov 01, 2022
Cheryl Ilov is an author, speaker, dancer, martial artist, and non-traditional physical therapist. She is also a former chronic pain patient, who was declared incurable by her medical team. Faced with a bleak future filled with pain, dysfunction, and disability, Cheryl made a bold decision. She knew she had to find her own path to healing and recovery, which launched her on a journey of self-awareness, lifelong learning, health, and healing. She made a full recovery, earned her master’s degree in physical therapy, opened her own practice, and dedicated herself to teaching her clients the art of healing through movement.
In Cheryl's words:
Our bodies have an incredible capacity to heal itself, especially when we have the tools to provide the proper environment to support the healing process. One of these tools is somatic movement, which truly embodies the mind-body connection. By integrating the science of physical therapy with the principles of somatic movement, Cheryl Ilov has created a program to help you decrease aches and pains, recover from, and prevent injuries, improve your fitness, core strength, posture, balance, and flexibility. Michael Hynes is an executive coach and the author of The Myth-Guided Mind: How to Unleash Your God-Given Genius at Work and at Home. As a former therapist he learned that life can be brutal. Terrible things happen to good people all the time. Michael himself was broken by life when his uncle was killed in a funeral attack. That marked the beginning of his journey to becoming a healer and being a catalyst for people to get past their worst days and waking up to the best day ever.
3 top tips for my audience:
1. Find healthy ways to connect: People, pets, nature, museums, live music, sports
2. Learn to connect to yourself breath, posture and meditation or deep listening
3. Be brave. Healing can be very hard. If commiting to put on socks is all you can manage do it and celebrate that youre out of bed and on your way to getting dressed.
